Vaccine Development and Distribution

This task force gives students the responsibility of planning the distribution of a newly developed vaccine for an infectious disease spreading through the nation

Task Force: Vaccine Development and Distribution

Congratulations!

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has put you in charge of the distribution of a newly developed vaccine for an infectious disease spreading throughout the nation. Your goal is to try and devise a plan to distribute the vaccine amongst citizens of our nation as well as other countries.

Why Are We Doing This?

Global health requires organizations such as the CDC to be equipped with the knowledge and resources to consider how every country relates to issues differently. Here we ask you to assume that there is a vaccine created for a disease in society and try to come up with a well-detailed plan for distributing it throughout the world.

Steps:

  1. Try to devise a plan to distribute the vaccine throughout the nation as well as other countries.
    1. What areas in our country might be prioritized?
    2. What other countries will be prioritized?
    3. How will healthcare coverage be applied to the vaccine? Will the vaccine cost people money? How much?
    4. How will you ensure that the vaccine reaches those who need it most?
  2. Think through the possible objections about your plan that someone could have and how you would answer them.
    1.  Is it unfair to prioritize low-income areas if higher-income areas have the means to financially be able to access the vaccine?
  3. Share with the group and see if you can convince them that your plan best lays out the steps for the distribution of this vaccine while considering the areas/countries that need more assistance.

 Things to Keep in Mind

  • You do not have to consider when and how to reach every country.
    • Do some brief research to see what areas might be least/most impacted.
      • Are there countries with lack of proper health care and resources/ poor sanitation in existing facilities that might need more assistance?
